Leaders need to grow a bigger mind

Leadership: a relational process

leadership is the art of connection - to oneself, to others,

and the evolving context in which we operate

At the heart of our work lies a holistic approach to leadership development, grounded in psychological principles and cutting-edge developmental theories. With over two decades of experience across diverse sectors, we partner with leaders to foster growth that is both transformative and sustainable.

By integrating Constructive Developmental Theories, Complexity Leadership, and Positive Psychology into actionable practices, we empower leaders to cultivate self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and purposeful decision-making.

Our signature tools, such as the Inner Compass and the Positive Traits Developmental Model, provide a framework for navigating complexity, building trust, and fostering psychological safety.

Leadership is about more than managing tasks – it’s about inspiring transformation. We equip leaders to lead themselves, empower others, and drive meaningful organizational change. Together, we create immersive cultures of growth and excellence, where innovation and resilience flourish.

There is constant white water ahead: Navigating leadership in a VUCA World

Leadership today is no longer about steering a steady ship—it’s about navigating constant white water ahead. In a world defined by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA), the challenges leaders face are unpredictable, fast-moving, and ever-changing. Traditional leadership approaches are no longer enough. To thrive in this dynamic landscape, leaders must develop agility, resilience, and the ability to grow a bigger mind.

At Relational Management, we equip leaders with the tools to expand their cognitive and emotional capacity, enabling them to make sense of complexity and lead with clarity. By integrating Constructive Developmental Theories, Affective Neuroscience, Positive Psychology, and Complexity Leadership Theory, we help leaders:

  • Cultivate a Bigger Mindset – Expanding the ability to think in new ways, see multiple perspectives, and make informed decisions in complexity.
  • Lead with the Inner Compass – Aligning leadership with core values, fostering trust, and navigating uncertainty with purpose.
  • Harness Energy for Sustainable Leadership – Using the Energetically Developmental Model to balance intrinsic motivation and well-being while managing stress and resistance.
  • Create Psychological Safety in Teams – Building cultures where innovation and collaboration can thrive despite uncertainty.

The white water ahead isn’t slowing down. Leaders who develop the ability to adapt, evolve, and lead with energy and connection will not only survive but create meaningful impact in an ever-changing world. The question is—are you ready to grow a bigger mind?

About our Leadership programs

Layout of the basic three days

Day One

Lead & Navigate Self

The journey begins with a focus on self-leadership, the foundation of all effective leadership. On Day One, participants are introduced to the Energetically Developmental Model, exploring the role of intrinsic motivation in driving sustainable performance and strategies for managing stress to maintain balance and focus.

A highlight of the day is the introduction of the Positive Traits Developmental Model, which helps leaders identify and balance their positive traits with their hidden potentials. This process enables leaders to grow a “bigger mind”—expanding their cognitive and emotional capacity to navigate complexity and lead with greater clarity and resilience.

We also delve into building resilience and sustainability as critical qualities for navigating leadership in a VUCA world. Central to this is aligning with your organizing principles—the core values that anchor decision-making and leadership under complex circumstances.

The importance of psychological safety and trust is emphasized as foundational to effective self-leadership and creating environments where others can thrive. Participants will also review their Emotional Style Questionnaire (ESQ) results, gaining valuable insights into their emotional dynamics and how they influence trust, safety, and leadership style.

Day One lays the groundwork for personal growth, equipping leaders with the clarity, resilience, and tools to balance their strengths, uncover hidden potentials, and lead themselves effectively in a complex world.

Day Two

Lead & Navigate Others

On Day Two, the focus shifts from self-leadership to leading and navigating relationships with others. Participants dive into the Inner Compass model, learning how to use it as a tool for guiding calibrating conversations. This includes navigating conflicts effectively, practicing active listening, and fostering transparency and honesty to build trust and achieve mutual understanding.

Through a combination of hands-on practical exercises and skills training, participants will develop the tools to handle complex interpersonal dynamics with confidence and clarity. These exercises emphasize real-world scenarios, ensuring that the skills learned can be directly applied in the workplace.

The day also highlights the importance of reflection, mindfulness, and presence in leadership. By cultivating self-awareness and being fully present in their interactions, participants will learn to create deeper connections, foster psychological safety, and lead others with authenticity and empathy.

Day Two equips leaders with the practical skills and emotional intelligence needed to build trust, resolve conflicts, and inspire collaboration in their teams. It’s a day of growth, connection, and developing the confidence to navigate relationships with purpose and integrity.

Day Three

Lead & Navigate Change

On Day Three, the focus shifts to leading and navigating change within organizations. Participants explore the critical role of culture in driving successful transformations and preparing teams for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

The day begins with an introduction to the Positive Traits Developmental Model at the organizational level, helping leaders identify and leverage strengths while addressing hidden potentials and shadow sides within their teams and culture. Participants will also review insights from the Cultural Agility Compass assessment, gaining a deeper understanding of how their organizational culture can adapt and thrive in the face of complexity.

A central theme is learning how to “grow a bigger mind”—expanding cognitive and emotional capacity to effectively navigate the increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) in the world. This includes fostering agility, building resilience, and aligning teams and culture with the demands of continuous change.

Through reflection and interactive exercises, participants will develop strategies to prepare their organizational culture for change. They’ll explore how to inspire agility, psychological safety, and collaboration, ensuring the culture supports innovation and adaptability.

Day Three equips leaders with the mindset, tools, and strategies to lead transformative change, empowering them to create cultures ready for the future and capable of thriving in uncertainty. It’s a day of vision, strategy, and building the foundation for lasting impact.

Our Leadership Programs

Energetically Developmental Leadership

The Energetically Developmental approach

The Energetically Developmental Framework brings together a set of interconnected models designed to empower leaders, teams, and organizations to thrive in today’s complex and fast-changing world. Together, these models provide a holistic approach to growth, resilience, and adaptability.

At its core is the Energetically Developmental Model, which helps individuals and teams understand and balance emotional and energy dynamics. By working with the Behavior Activation System (BAS)—which fosters intrinsic motivation through emotions like interest, joy, and pride—and the Behavior Inhibition System (BIS)—which addresses limiting emotions such as fear, anger, and shame—leaders and teams can build sustainable energy and resilience.

The Inner Compass is a tool for aligning values, principles, and actions, helping leaders navigate complexity with self-awareness and clarity. It ensures that decision-making is rooted in a strong sense of purpose, enabling leaders to stay grounded and authentic in challenging circumstances.

Through the process of Calibrating Conversations, the framework teaches leaders how to engage in transparent, trust-building dialogue. This approach fosters psychological safety, resolves conflicts, and creates mutual understanding, allowing teams to collaborate effectively and navigate difficult situations with confidence.

The Positive Traits Developmental Model offers a pathway for growth by helping individuals and teams balance their strengths, uncover hidden potentials, and address misused traits. It focuses on synergy development and tackling shadow sides to foster alignment and cohesion across leadership and team dynamics.

Finally, the Cultural Agility Compass provides a roadmap for navigating cultural transformation within organizations. It enhances both individual and collective strengths, preparing teams to adapt to complexity while aligning actions with cultural values and strategic goals.

Together, these models form a comprehensive framework that cultivates emotional intelligence, leadership agility, and cultural adaptability. The Energetically Developmental Framework empowers organizations to build thriving, purpose-driven cultures capable of flourishing in a VUCA world.
